Hole 2
Time to "grip it and rip it" - maybe...
A Par 5 that dog legs left after the drive that needs to be stroked confidently to a wide and forgiving landing area. The second shot can be fraught with danger depending on your drive as you may have to take on the trees, or lay up and approach the green from approximately 120-150 metres. The green is protected by three bunkers and a marshland to the left. Make 5 here and your round can be off to a "flier".

Take a stance - and chance your round..
Water everywhere, short front off the tee just in case you "cold top it", and a second hazard that will almost draw your shot away from the green - or that's what seems to happen! A Par 3 that will test your nerve, but throw up birdies if you're willing to trust your swing.

Now the fun begins...
The prevailing winds on Swan Island are Sou' Westerlies - and this one is usually "straight into the teeth" of them. A Par 4 measuring 331 metres, this hole has a bail out area on the right, and OOB on the left - and you need to carry about 80 metres of rough to reach the santa ana fairway. Left side bunkers and mounding then protect a green that is split diagonally by a ridge that sorts out your putting prowess.

How wide is this fairway...
The fairway might be wide on this 331 metre Par 4, but you will need a career best shot into an elevated green that slopes from back to front. A tough green to hit, with OOB (the carpark) adjacent, the bail out area is to the left, leaving you a tough chip and run, or the flat stick, to get you close enough make your par. And you'll need it 'cos the next hole is a beauty!

The best Par 4 in the district
Tough in any conditions, this hole has it all. Length, panoramic views of Queenscliff, Swan Bay and Port Phillip Bay, and the ability to destroy your round, or make it! You'll need a great drive, an ability to block out the views as you take your stance for your second shot, and a good putting stroke. 4's good, 3's are rare, and doubles, triples etc are the norm. The Signature Hole at Queenscliff Golf Club. Enjoy!

Finally down wind, where's the fairway?
279 metres down wind, the Bay wrapped around you on the tee, does it get any better than this? Well yes, but before you write down 4 you'll need to avoid the water hazard on the right, the bunker 180 metres out, the OOB all the way down the left, and the two green side traps. Eagles are possible, but so are doubles, triples and nightmares!

The tee's set deep in the Mulga...
338 metre Par 4, usually with the wind out of the right, this hole plays relatively straightforward, until you reach the green. Elevated she sits, protected by two deep pot style bunkers, and some clever swales and ridges. You will need a lot of imagination with your second shot. Go on, hit it high and handsome, then putt with surety before striding to the 9th, and the chance of breaking 40 for the first time in your life!

Your knees are knockin' - what if I shank it!
Some members never hit this green, usually because they find the trouble short and green side (bunkers). The canny golfer will opt for one more club and find themselves long, but in less trouble. Interestingly though, this hole has also been aced more times than the other par 3's - just be sure that you tee it up in the right place!

You've recharged the batteries, now let's go!
So you didn't set the course alight early, but you're a strong finisher, aren't you! A straight away 356 metre Par 4 is just what the doctor ordered. Drive it like a dart, then put your rescue club in your hand and find the green in regulation, because the slope in this green will test you out, as will the mounds and/or bunker that encase it.

Is there a better view than this anywhere?
The first of consecutive Par 5's, this tee becomes an island over Easter when the king tides hit. Your drive will need to be longish if you want to see what awaits you around the right hand dog leg. Hit your second well and you will be rewarded with a straight forward approach shot to a green that has only one protective bunker, but is on the large size so putts can be awkward lengths.

Jeez... I'd better hit this one straight!
Twenty paces shorter than the last hole, at 473 metres this represents a real birdie opportunity, provided your drive is long, say 230-240 metres, and your second shot can carry bunkers to make the green, and stop! There are seven bunkers on this hole, three of them green side, and they all do their job. This is the first of three holes that the members refer to as "Amen Corner" - do well over this stretch and you're well on your way to taking home the bikkies!

Some visitors can't find this tee...
This beautiful Par 4 330 metre hole sets you up to drive toward a generously wide fairway that doglegs right, around cavernous bunkering, and leads you down ever so slightly to the narrowest green that you have ever seen. Miss it and you're "on the beach" - with little green to play to - and a veritable "jungle" awaits you if you "skinny" your bunker shot! Amen Corner strikes again!

The toughest Par 3 - a beauty!
You're nearly there - Amen Corner hasn't got you - yet! Usually straight into the breeze, this 176 metre delight is all class. Don't go left, the only thing you'll find there is lost golfers remains, and maybe Benito's Treasure, but you also might never find your way out. And right's not much better. Three green side traps, a sloping green, back to front, all add up to create a compelling hole - you won't forget it - for better or worse!

Ah - open spaces again - don't look left..
The first of three tough par 4's that will sort out your score - and the 17th is a "sleeper". You will need to carry 70 metres of valley and trees just to get to this fairway, and you'll probably end up with the ball below your feet - just what you need when you're looking at a 150-160 metre shot into the green! Hit your second shot well because anything off line will be punished, severely!

Aim it at the clubhouse, and hit it well...
Rated 2, this Par 4 hole is all length at 355 metres, all into the prevailing wind - a true golfing test. A wide landing area gives you the best chance to hit a long iron, or something more reliable, into a green that is sitting up in front of you. Stay out of the sand either side and you will score well.

The "Sleeper" hole - be careful...
Trees line both sides of this fairway, lots of them. You can almost put driver away here, unless the wind is out of the north. Either way, keep it straight, and leave yourself a wedge shot into a large, flat green - well it looks flat! Definitely "birdie" territory, but don't get greedy!

A classic finishing hole - bring it home!
You need four to break eighty for a PB - so you'll need to think this one through. At 361 metres it's tough given the prevailing wind, so you'll need to rip one, right! Have a go if you like, because there is a big, forgiving fairway ahead of you, but put it left and you're in trouble, or right and you've created a real problem by giving yourself a blind shot in to a green protected by 3 bunkers - good luck, play it well - it's a great hole!
